一般认为这句话提炼自1929的一次发布会，在发布会中爱迪生说了Noneofmyinventionscamebyaccident.IseeaworthwhileneedtobemetandImaketrialaftertrialuntilitcomes.Whatitboilsdowntoisonepercentinspirationandninety-ninepercentperspiration.说的是勤奋的作用。

另外一次他说的版本是："Geniusisonepercentinspirationandninety-ninepercentperspiration.Accordingly,a'genius'isoftenmerelyatalentedpersonwhohasdoneallofhisorherhomework."依旧是在说勤奋的作用。

爱迪生本人没有说过“但没有这1%的灵感那99%的汗水也是徒劳”这样的下半句。
